What is Satin?

This fabric is favoured for its ultra-smooth and buttery-soft qualities.

It is not a raw material as it is a type of weave. It is a complex weave that is made from other types of fabric.

Usually, satin will have a glossy and a dull side.

The term ‘satin’ was created in the middle ages and originates from the port town in China ‘Zaitun’. By the 14th century the fabric was widely available in Europe, but was mainly used by royalty due to its extremely high cost.

Satin vs Silk

These two materials are both favoured world wide because of their luxurious feel and undeniable softness.

The two do have similarities and look pretty much the same, however there are some noticeable differences.

Firstly, silk is a natural material. Silk comes from the cocoons of silk worms, whereas satin is a weave.

Satin can be a more delicate than silk, so when handling your sheets a little extra care is needed. This will help prolong the life of your bedding.

When looking at appearance, silk is described to have a shimmering appearance. Satin is much more glossy.

Silk is much harder to produce as a single thread requires thousands of silk worms. This is what makes it so expensive. Satin is much easier to produce, so it is a more budget friendly option.

How to Wash Your Satin Bedding

Washing this bedding is a lot easier than you might think. Not all is machine washable, but these sheets are.

For best results turn the sheets inside out, use a basic detergent and delicate cycle. To preserve the quality we recommend air drying.

If necessary, you can iron them. However, use a protective covering such as a handkerchief or lightweight tea towel.

Store in a cool, dry place. Radiators or direct sunlight can damage the appearance and quality of your satin.
